Chin Chelliah Bottinelli started her home furnishings business in Singapore more than 15 years ago. She is the founder of Asiatique Collections, a furniture and home accessories boutique that blends contemporary designs with Asian and European influences, to create distinctive personal sanctuaries for the savvy, cosmopolitan globetrotter.
Asiatique Collections began as a modest 300 square foot store in Dempsey Road in 1998. Today, it is a 5,000 square foot boutique offering an exclusive range of globally sourced furniture, art, home accessories and jewellery. Every piece is personally hand-picked from around Asia and Europe by Chin, who then curates and styles the limited-edition pieces into thoughtful, elegant collections.
Chin started out in advertising, but soon realized that she wanted to pursue her childhood passion for beautiful interiors. In 1995, she began developing home décor gift ideas with hotels and expanded this into gift collections that she supplied to department stores and retailers. Within two years, egged on by clients and friends who recognised her style and eye for detail, Chin set up Asiatique.
“When I was a kid, whenever someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said an entrepreneur,” she says. “Asiatique is my childhood dream come true, and this is why I pour all my passion into my business. My philosophy is that there is nothing in the store being offered to my customers that I wouldn’t buy or produce for myself.”
Asiatique reflects not only Chin’s eclectic tastes, but also her cosmopolitan lifestyle. An avid traveller, whose favourite places include New York, Switzerland, Bali and Istanbul, she is on the road frequently. However, she also loves spending time at home. “The home is our sanctuary, the place we seek out to escape from the fast pace of urban living, where we feel happiest and most comfortable,” she says. “We want to help create that sanctuary, to create a living space that is beautiful, comfortable and that reflects your personality.”
Chin’s knack for curating different collections caters to the tastes of a savvy, well-travelled clientele. “Many people love the Asian aesthetic but they also want their furniture to reflect modern sophistication. I hand pick furnishings with contemporary, clean designs and diverse textures. Because most of the pieces at Asiatique come in neutral palettes, customers can easily add our pieces to what already exists in their homes to create a space that is personal and distinctive.”
